Masasi Girls' Secondary School

Our Projects

Masasi Girls Secondary School is located in Masasi  200km from Mtwara town. The school is one out of two high schools in the Mtwara region. Even though the school has extensive facilities, most of the buildings were insalubrious, with the girl’s washrooms and toilet facilities being the worst affected.

The Masasi Girls Secondary School project was completed in August 2013 and WAF was successful in renovating 12 toilets and 6 bathrooms for the school. Further, WAF was able to construct two septic tanks which will ensure that waste disposal conforms to proper hygienic standards.

Objectives

  • To provide proper sanitation amenities to cater for the health and well-being of the students of Masasi Girl’s Secondary school.
  • To provide the girls with a clean, healthy and safe environment to study in.

Outcome

  • Renovation of a block of lavatory buildings – one block containing 12 toilet cubicles.
  • Renovation of the washroom building block.
  • Construction of two Soak Away pits.

Msimbati Secondary School

Our Projects

Continuing from our previous work with Msimbati Secondary School, which started back in 2004, WAF felt it was prudent to do some revocation work and modify some classrooms and the girls’ dormitory which the Foundation had constructed back in 2004.

In May 2013, WAF together with their Directors, donors and volunteers, completed the renovation work which involved painting of Msimbati secondary school classrooms, girls’ dormitory, rehabilitation of school structures and school grounds.

One of the factors affecting secondary school students is not having enough time for personal study. In 2013, Wentworth Africa Foundation connected Msimbati Secondary School to electricity for the first time since the school’s inception in 2004. The results have been that students are able to study at night. We believe this project will give the 400+ students an opportunity to study whenever they can and thus increase their chances of continuing with higher education.

Solar-light Project for Secondary Schools

Our Projects

One of the factors affecting secondary school students is not having enough time for personal study.

Students are required to help their parents with household chores after school and therefore the only real time they have to study is night time. Only 40% of Tanzanians have access to electricity and most of these live in urban areas. For our two rural secondary schools in Mtwara and Lindi, having access to electricity at night is extremely important.

In 2013, Wentworth Africa Foundation installed solar panels to light up Msimbati Secondary School and Mnolela Secondary School. We believe this project will give the 300+ students an opportunity to study whenever they can and thus increase their chances of continuing with higher education.

MaKuYa Cultural Festival

Our Projects

Every year Mtwara’s three main tribes celebrate their culture by sharing their cultural knowledge.

In 2012, the MaKuYa cultural Festival took place in November and Wentworth Africa Foundation was delighted to be able to sponsor such a well organised and educational project.

One World Futbol Donation

Our Projects

The One World Futbol project is a global mission. Its founders have created a self-inflating soccer ball made from the same material as Crocs.

The aim of the project is to “make a meaningful impact on the lives of youth around the world through the One World Futbol, a virtually-indestructible ball that never goes flat and never needs a pump.

Our goal is to bring the joy of soccer and play to youth in disadvantaged communities so that children can be children no matter where they live. Wentworth African Foundation has donated over 100 Futbols in Mtwara and Lindi schools and villages. The school captains from the football and netball teams were there to receive the donations.

The new water tank

Clean Water for Secondary Schools

Our Projects

In May 2012, the Directors for the Wentworth Africa Foundation visited Tanzania and their main target was to visit the two schools which the Foundation has in the past supported.

Msimbati Secondary School and Mnolela Secondary Schools are located in the rural regions of Mtwara and Lindi. During the trip, the Directors identified the most pressing needs for the two schools were access to clean water, and affordable and reliable Light.

Water well before installation of tanks

Objectives

  • The existing water harvesting from a hole in the ground is the reason for the high incidence of diarrhoea and other stomach issues. The female boarders, in particular, suffer from chronic stomach problems.  In Msimbati Secondary School the female borders have to walk half a kilometre to collect water.
  • The seriousness of the problem was clear and the Wentworth Foundation team put in place a plan to construct a very simple, easy to maintain water harvesting system that was large enough in volume to provide water year round.

Outcome

  • The result was construction of 9 x 5000 Litre tanks dotted around the school structures.  Once the rain started in November/December 2012, the tanks would hold enough water to be used throughout next year.
